Association

The Town of Arlon decided to join the network, because Orolaunum vicus was already connected to the whole of the Roman Empire during the ancient period. Located at the crossroads of two important Roman roads, one going from Metz to Tongeren, the other going from Reims to Trier, Arlon has preserved important traces of the ancient era. Its archaeological museum presents the richest lapidary section in Belgium. Aware of the importance of the Gallo-Roman past in the construction of its cultural and tourist image, the Town of Arlon has chosen to invest in human and financial resources in the safeguarding and dissemination of its ancient heritage. The Municipal Council ensures that real estate projects are always preceded by archaeological excavations and, when possible, ensures that the remains discovered are kept on site, or failing that, are studied and transferred to the Archaeological Museum. This is how the Town of Arlon has invested in safeguarding the Jupiter Tower, the Neptune Tower, and the archaeological park presenting the remains of Roman baths. The Archaeological Museum of Arlon is also the place where scientific partnerships with Belgian and foreign universities take shape. Students and doctoral students study part of the collections there as part of their thesis work. Recently, an international study project with the University of Luxembourg has made it possible to reconstitute an ancient monument known as “of the Amazon”, from scattered blocks that were in the museum’s reserves. Arlon sees international cooperation as a way of exchanging knowledge and skills. The Archaeological Museum of Arlon will gladly host any traveling exhibition produced by the network of Roman roads.

The Network of Cooperation of Cities on the Ruta de la Plata is a voluntary association constituted by cities located on the so-called Ruta Via de la Plata and in its area of influence, for joint action in the defense and promotion of its tourist, historical, cultural and economic resources. The main objective pursued by this association is to publicize the tourist resources of the populations that make up it, while revaluing the many attractions that the Ruta Via de la Plata represents for its variety and breadth.

This association has full and public legal personality and began its journey in April 1997 with the signing, by the mayors of Gijón, León, Zamora, Salamanca, Cáceres and Seville, of the statutes that govern it. Over the years different locations have been joined on the itinerary. Currently, the municipalities of 33 municipalities and the Province de Cáceres (Extremadura) are part of the Cooperation Network.

The MuséoParc Alésia opened its doors in 2012. It is located in the heart of Burgundy, on the very site of the famous battle of Alésia which took place in 52 BC.   

It has been made to talk about what really happened in Alésia. Three sites are composing the MuséoParc Alésia:  

• the Museum which presents the history of Alésia, from prehistory to the present day, 
• the remains of the Gallo-Roman city of Alésia, 
• the statue of Vercingétorix  

  The site is enhanced through a new permanent visit route, but also through temporary exhibitions, activities throughout the year, as well as events.  

The Fondazione Aquileia, having as partners the Ministry of Culture, Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the Municipality of Aquileia and the Archdiocese of Gorizia, was instituted in 2008 to manage and promote the extraordinary archaeological heritage of Aquileia.

Braga, Minho city, district capital and county seat, is located in the Northern Region of Portugal and on the Cávado river. It covers an area of 183.4 km2, has 62 parishes and will have about 190 000 inhabitants in 2021.

Founded during the Roman Empire under the name of Bracara Augusta, it has more than 2000 years of history as a city, and is currently an important commercial, industrial, university and tourist centre.

It has three universities, standing out among them, the University of Minho, which is distributed along the Braga/Guimarães axis and attracts students from all over the country, which, together with the growth in tourism, contributes to the development of commerce and services, fundamental to the district’s economy.

As a result of more than 40 years of archaeological research, the city of Braga has today, an important archaeological estate, distributed among museums and archaeological sites, many of these musealized and open to the public, as for example, the Pre-Roman and Roman Rupestrian Sanctuary “Fonte do Ídolo”, the Roman Spa of alto da cividade, Dómus of Escola Velha da Sé, Núcleo Museológico de S.. Martinho de Dume, or in phase of musealization as are Insullae of Carvalheira, Ruinas de santo Antonio das Travessas.

The municipality of Braga, as guardian of most of the above-mentioned museological spaces and manager of the archaeological interventions carried out in its municipality, develops, in partnership with the University of Minho, the archaeological research project “salvamento de Bracara Augusta”.

The archaeological site of ancient Sirmium is recognized as a heritage of outstanding cultural, historic, artistic and scientific values. Its research, protection and presentation lasts over 65 years. It is known as one of the best excavated sites in Serbia. The Imperial palace is one of the most important localities of Sirmium, confirming its roll as one of the seats of the Roman Empire during Late Antiquity, administrative, economic and political seat of the province of Pannonia Secunda and the prefecture of Illyricum. In the awareness of its importance Ministry for Culture and the Ministry for the Economy and Regional Development of the Republic of Serbia and the City of Sremska Mitrovica have provided fundding of the Project for Covering the Imperial Palace of Sirmium in order to combine efforts and benefit from synergies in the consolidation of a model of conservation and dissemination of the site. The project granted the maximum protection, whilst at the same time promotion of Roman Heritage values throught a high-quality cultural tourism destination.
